SST Round 2 - Darwin's Hidden Valley Supercars Recap
OW What a Mega EVENT!
We flew in late Thursday afternoon to Darwin and got to Hidden Valley Raceway to release our new GTECHNIQ stadium super truck! A big thanks to everyone who came on board and made the dream possible;
DOBINSONS SPRING AND SUSPENSION
Friday
Our first practice session went well, just feeling out the track and made a few adjustments to the truck. The first thing we noticed is that due to Darwin weather being so hot and the back straight being so long, we were struggling a lot with brake fade after 4 laps or so. It was a steep learning curve trying to make the brakes last.
On the Friday night I was invited down as a special guest to the Nitro Night Drags event part of the supercars to Drag Stadium Trucks all night. The best run I did was a 12.44 which is bloody impressive because if you consider the similar engine in and transmission package in a normal road car or 4wd they would be hard to beat that. To put it in prospective a Brodie Kostecki in his v8 Supercar came down and done a drag and he done a 11.1 so a stadium truck is only 1.5 seconds slower over 400m. The crowd was huge.
Saturday
Qualifying went well; qualified 9th.
Race 1 - We started off the grid on the front row and raced very aggressively the whole race and held our own. During this race, unfortunately we were involved in a big crash and made contact with Paul Weel in the air which made him barrel roll several times in the air and come to a stop. Thankfully Paul wasn’t hurt. All in all it was a massive eye opener to be involved in a crash like this. Despite the crash we were quite happy with our improvements in racing since the Tasmania Round finishing 8th.
Sunday
We battled mechanical dramas with a fuel pump issue..
Roll onto Townsville 500! July 9-11. See you there!
